Percy Baker was enlisted in the 6th battalion the Wiltshire regiment with the regimental
number 17856. He died on the 2nd July 1916 aged 25. He is one of those who "The Fortune
Of War Denied The Known And Honoured Burial Given To His Comrades In Death". He has no
known grave. He may rest in a grave marked " A Soldier of the Great war Known unto God"
or he may yet rest somewhere beneath the battle field waiting to be found.
His sacrifice is commemorated on pier 3A of the Thiepval Memorial. The Memorial holds the
names of seventy two thousand British and Commonwealth troops that died in the Somme
battle and have no known grave. There are Eight Kinver men commemorated on this memorial.

Percy Baker's effects were his outstanding pay of £4/3s/0d and his War gratuity of £8/0s/0d. His mother received £2/15s/5d also £5/6s/7d from the gratuity. Three shares of £1/7s/0d were retained for some reason. His Mother was also awarded £0/3s/0d a week pension from the 17th April 1917. She would also have received the medals he was awarded. As he entered the theatre of war on the 19 July 1915 they would include the 1914/15 Star the British War Medal and the Victory medal. She would also have received the Memorial Plaque and Scroll issued to all the next of kin of the fallen.
